Anarchism in Film

In this short course we will view and discuss films related to anarchism, a social theory and practice that opposes all forms of domination and seeks to create a free, cooperative society. Included will be documentaries such as “Sacco and Vanzetti,”Emma Goldman,” and “Anarchism in America,” and dramatic films such as José Luis Cuerda’s “La Lengua de las Mariposas” (“Butterfly”), Vicente Aranda’s “Libertarias,” and Luis Buñuel’s “The Phantom of Liberty.” The films address topics such as anarchist organization, personal relationships and self-transformation, anti-authoritarian education, anarcha-feminism, the anarchist workers’ movement, and anarchist art and creativity. Sessions will usually consist of about an hour and a half of film viewing and an hour of discussion.

Sunday evenings at 7:00 at the New Orleans Lyceum, 618 City Park Ave., from Jan. 25 to Mar. 1. A detailed schedule will be sent to those who register. For further information, please email clark@loyno.edu.
